BERLIN AGAIN, A YEAR LATER

Two days at Charité in Berlin

12-13 February 2019 · Charité Medical College, Dental Department, Berlin · LAB

Two days at the dental department of Charité Medical College, a third Berlin visit in thirteen months, of which the surviving record is one hotel invoice and five photographs.

Tarry Singh stands with an unnamed colleague beside a historic dental treatment chair, in a room lined with glass display cabinets, south west Berlin, afternoon of 12 February 2019.

The paper trail for this one is thin. A single invoice from enjoy hotel Berlin City Messe on Rudolstädter Straße covers one night, room 109, 12 to 13 February 2019, made out to Tarry Singh in Assen. Nothing else sits in the folder beside it: no deck, no programme, no attendance list.

The host was the dental department of Charité Medical College. The photographs fix the afternoon: at 16:14 on 12 February the phone is in Berlin's south west, a couple of hundred metres from the dental campus, inside a room of glass display cabinets built around a treatment chair from an earlier century. Tarry is in the frame with a colleague, carrying the coffee.

Berlin was familiar ground by then. A talk in January 2018, a bioinformatics hackathon a month after that, and this, thirteen months on, at the city's university hospital. Dentistry put the work back where it had been going all year: radiographs, and what a network can read off them. Nine months later a dental model would be one of three medical cases presented on the main stage in Belgrade.

The rest of the trip reads off the timestamps. Dinner in the city's south at 19:40, a tram after nine, then a train window and wet green fields the following afternoon. What was taught at Charité, and to whom, is written down nowhere in this folder, and it is not filled in here.

One frame survives from these two days.
