Foundations to Frontiers at DSC MENA 2024
On 20 April 2024 Tarry Singh took the Foundations to Frontiers talk to DSC MENA 2024 at Egypt University of Informatics, in Egypt's New Administrative Capital.
DSC MENA 2024 ran under one line printed across the hoardings: change the world through data. The theme was the age of AI. The host was Egypt University of Informatics, in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo. Pink arches, a partner wall and a photo backdrop stood on the forecourt before the doors opened.
Tarry Singh gave a talk called Foundations to Frontiers. The file open on the lectern laptop read Foundations2Frontiers-Egypt-20Apr2024. The material ran from the base machinery of learning systems to generative AI, with one section headed Our General Purpose Generative AI. The closing slide carried an email address rather than a summary.
The auditorium filled. Teal seats, reserved cards printed DSC MENA along the front row, faculty and older guests in suits a row ahead of students in hoodies and lanyards. Volunteers in blue vests worked the doors.
The session did not end when the talk did. Students formed a ring around the lectern and kept asking, and the queue reached back up the aisle. About twenty of them stayed for a group photograph under the title slide.
The conference was organised by Ntervento with the Data Science Conference series, under the patronage of Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Egypt University of Informatics and ITIDA were strategic partners, CyShield the main partner, Huawei the platinum one. The evening before, the speakers met at a hotel on the Nile in Cairo, where the organisers opened with a short welcome and a banner behind them.
